From Jonas Wenström to HexaformerAlready in the late 19th century, Jonas Wenström realized that the three phase transformers should be designed with the same distance between all three legs of the core to optimize its performance. Wenström also managed to design and manufacture transformers where the legs were put in a shape of a triangle to achieve this optimal design. However, difficulties in the manufacturing and high cost in general made him and other manufacturers put the coils in a straight line instead. Today, more than 100 years later, that is still the way transformers are typically made! Hexaformer is the exception to that rule! Through an innovative way to wind the transformer core instead of stacking sheets of metal, Hexaformer has managed to create a closed symmetrical cage core for its transformers. This design shows exceptional properties in many dimensions, such as:
A similar technology is also used in the Hexaformer's Petersén coils for phase compensation. These cores are also wound to a triangular shape on which three coils are mounted to make the solution small, yet highly efficient. |
